Seemingly appearing out of nowhere, but occasionally running in families, the double chin (submental fat) is a unique accumulation of confidence-damaging fat under the chin and around the anterior neck, resistant to even the most rigorous diet or exercise regime. Submental fat may result from the aging process, weight gain, or simply genetics.

KYBELLA® is appropriate for men and women who have stubborn fat under their chin. Many patients turn to KYBELLA® as it provides fast-acting results with zero downtime or recovery. Potential candidates for KYBELLA® must be in good overall health and, after a thorough discussion with Dr. Boyd, have realistic expectations for their final results.
Unlike other injectable treatments, such as BOTOX® Cosmetic or dermal fillers, which smooth wrinkles or add volume, KYBELLA® dissolves unwanted fat to reveal a slimmer and smoother chin contour.
KYBELLA® is made from a deoxycholic acid formula that is injected over the course of two to six monthly sessions—each lasting about 20 minutes. Deoxycholic acid mimics the activity of naturally occurring fat elimination.
Your surgeon or aesthetician may begin by applying a topical numbing agent to make the injection more comfortable. Once this is complete, anywhere between one and three vials of KYBELLA® will be injected into the treatment area—this amount will vary depending on the quantity of submental fat.
Fat cells will continue to disintegrate for six to eight weeks following your final injection.
Patients can return to their normal activities immediately following their KYBELLA® injections. Some patients may experience minor swelling, numbness, and redness, but these resolve quickly.
KYBELLA® is a non-surgical treatment that results in no scarring.
KYBELLA® results will develop over the weeks and months following your final injection as the body metabolizes the fat cells affected by the deoxycholic acid formula.
Although a single treatment can have significant results, patients are generally recommended to undergo a series of treatments (usually between two and six). These repeated treatments allow patients to maximize their results and realize a thinner, more defined jawline.
Before KYBELLA®, patients interested in eliminating submental fat had one option: plastic surgery with liposuction, facelift surgery, or neck lift surgery. While KYBELLA® requires multiple treatments, as opposed to a single liposuction treatment, the results are comparable, and KYBELLA® injections require no incisions, anesthesia, scarring, or downtime.
The non-invasive nature of cosmetic injectables like KYBELLA® also reduces the possibility of surgical complications, such as bleeding, bruising, infection, asymmetry, change in the hairline, or nerve damage. Any side effects that arise from KYBELLA® will resolve on their own.
KYBELLA® is often performed as a stand-alone treatment, as it provides one of the most effective non-surgical solutions for double chins. Patients who wish to address other cosmetic aging concerns can choose to combine their treatment with a Silhouette InstaLift™. The Silhouette InstaLift™ is a minimally invasive procedure that lifts the tissues of the mid face and jowls to improve facial contours and help reverse signs of aging. While the Silhouette InstaLift™ does not directly address the double chin, it can significantly reduce any sagging tissues that have descended towards the jawline.
A facelift is always an option for patients looking for a more direct and dramatic solution to their aging concerns. Facelift surgery targets cosmetic issues in the lower face and neck. During your consultation, Dr. Boyd will help you decide what treatment combinations best fit your aesthetic goals and explain your candidacy for additional or alternative treatments.
Non-surgical and surgical treatments are not performed simultaneously. If you are choosing to undergo several treatments, you will need to arrange separate treatment times.
