FAQs About BOTOX® Cosmetic

Posted June 13, 2016 in BOTOX® Cosmetic

Even though BOTOX® Cosmetic is widely known, many people know very little about what it is, how it works, or why it is used. Here are some answers to frequently asked questions about this highly popular anti-aging treatment.

BOTOX® Cosmetic contains minuscule amounts of a highly purified botulinum toxin protein that has been refined from the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. It blocks neurotransmission in muscles. Put more simply, BOTOX® Cosmetic is a liquid that can be safely injected into the face as an anti-aging treatment to temporarily knock out the muscles that cause wrinkles.

What Is BOTOX® Cosmetic Used for?

BOTOX® Cosmetic is primarily used to temporarily treat moderate to severe wrinkles around the brows and eyes. Dr. Boyd uses BOTOX® Cosmetic to treat frown lines, crow’s feet, the transverse nasal crease, bunny lines, marionette lines, and dimples over the chin. Although not a filler, it can also be used for upper lip enhancement.

How Does BOTOX® Cosmetic Reduce Wrinkles?

Wrinkles form due to repeated movement of the facial muscles over time. BOTOX® Cosmetic reduces wrinkles by temporarily preventing the facial muscles from contracting. The injections force the muscles to relax, which smooths out the skin. With controlled application to only a few specific muscles, BOTOX® Cosmetic injections minimize wrinkles.

Will BOTOX® Cosmetic Treatments Make Me Look Like I’ve Had Work Done?

BOTOX® Cosmetic injections, if performed correctly by a qualified and experienced medical expert, such as Dr. Boyd, should not make it look like you’ve had ‘work done.’ The injections will relax the treated muscles to make you look more youthful and rested. You should still be able to make normal facial expressions without difficulty.

What Is BOTOX® Cosmetic Treatment Like?

A treatment session for BOTOX® Cosmetic lasts only 10 minutes. It is a quick office treatment after which you can return to normal activities.

Does It Hurt?

Some patients report that treatment with BOTOX® Cosmetic feels like a slight pinch. Dr. Boyd will apply ice or a topical anesthetic to numb the area before treatment.

What Are the Risks or Side Effects?

A small percentage of patients who receive BOTOX® Cosmetic treatment may experience transient eyelid drooping, eyelid swelling, dry mouth, discomfort, tiredness, headache, neck pain, blurred vision, double vision, dry eyes, decreased eyesight, or allergic reactions. Additional side effects can also occur. Dr. Boyd will go over these details with you during your consultation. Most patients experience few or no side effects from BOTOX® Cosmetic treatment.

Am I a Good Candidate?

Good candidates for BOTOX® Cosmetic are physically healthy, have no neuromuscular diseases, are not pregnant or nursing, and are at least 18 years old.

How Do I Know if I Need BOTOX® Cosmetic or Another Treatment?

If you have moderate to severe wrinkles around your eyes and on your forehead, you may need BOTOX® Cosmetic. If your skin has lost volume and begun to sag or if you have developed permanent (‘static’) wrinkles, facial fillers may be more appropriate for you. If you have facial volume loss, skin sagging, and wrinkles, facelift surgery may be something to consider. Dr. Boyd can help you determine whether you should receive BOTOX® Cosmetic, facial fillers, or another anti-aging treatment or procedure.

How Long Do the Results Last?

The effects of BOTOX® Cosmetic are temporary and can last between a few months and one year. Repeat treatments may be performed to maintain the results.

How Often Can I Receive BOTOX® Cosmetic Injections?

Patients can receive BOTOX® Cosmetic every three to four months to maintain their results.
