Is the Brazilian Butt Lift Safe?

Posted August 17, 2020 in Brazilian Butt Lift

4 Minute Read:

In the era of the hourglass figure, women want shapeliness in their derrières more than ever.

For countless women, their favorite butt routine at the gym or diet in the kitchen may not deliver the goods. Thankfully, the Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL) has found significant success in providing cosmetic solutions that would otherwise seem impossible. With advances in fat grafting technology, women can enhance the fullness of their rear ends by repurposing their own fat.

Not only does this make for more natural-looking results than your typical butt implant, but an appearance with more definition that announces more personalization and accuracy.

The major question confronting both plastic surgeons and patients is: “Are Brazilian Butt Lifts safe?” Over recent years, several reports have surfaced questioning the safety of this technique. Several of these reports have even determined a mortality rate of 1 in 3,000.

Such a staggering statistic may pose doubts as to whether the Brazilian Butt Lift is right for you. While there is no denying that risk is present, Brazilian Butt Lift surgery can be quite safe given the right surgeon following the recommendations of professional societies.

Where Does the Danger in the Brazilian Butt Lift Come From?

Fat grafting involves harvesting fat cells from the body with liposuction (from regions such as the abdomen, hips, or thighs) and injecting those cells back into the buttocks. On paper, this treatment sounds very straightforward and without risk—as it is, in fact, an injection.

Unfortunately, this injection can go wrong in the hands of an unskilled practitioner: one who is unaware of the correct placement of the fat. When the fat is injected too deep, it runs the risk of entering the bloodstream and causing a fat embolism in the heart or lungs.

Fat in the Brazilian Butt Lift should only be injected into the buttock’s subcutaneous (fatty) layer—never any deeper. When the fat remains in this area, the risk is eliminated, and the Brazilian Butt Lift is safe. Injections should not be made into the gluteal muscles or the space immediately deep to them where there are large blood vessels. Injection of fat directly into blood vessels may have fatal consequences.

How Does Purification for BBL Fat Transfer Work?

A proper BBL requires the surgeon to perform a purification process that ensures that toxins, bacteria, and dangerous fats are not re-entering the body once repurposed for your butt lift. This also removes any blood from the fat, ensuring that your veins and arteries nearest to your butt do not become clogged or disrupted from their normal function. Sometimes this requires gravity filtration, which can minimize the damage done to the fat cells being harvested.

No matter which method your surgeon uses, it is important that he uses purification as part of his injection process. More than anything, the purification process is all about precision and technique, which can be found in board-certified plastic surgeons like Dr. Brian Boyd.

How Is a BBL Personalized for You?

One of the easiest ways a poorly trained surgeon can “botch” any cosmetic surgery is by taking a one-size-fits-all approach to aesthetic treatment. The buttocks may seem like 100 percent fat; however, in reality, it is a complex area of the body full of muscles, joints, tendons, and an ecosystem of bodily functions.

Choosing a board-certified plastic surgeon significantly increases the probability that they have mastered the art of tailoring cosmetic techniques to fit unique anatomy and beauty goals. This can also dramatically decrease the risk of fat injections being placed in areas that cause deformities, clotting, infection, and more threatening risks to one’s health.

How Does Professional Experience Make a BBL Safe?

Most factors that determine your BBL safety are out of your control. That is why it is essential to choose an experienced, well-renowned surgeon with years of experience and who keeps up to date with the latest techniques.

No matter which facts you may come across regarding BBL risks online or through personal research, nothing will compare to getting an in-person consultation with a board-certified plastic surgeon who is aware of the risks and benefits involved in your surgery.
